How to measure envelopes

 

Measuring windows

  • position seal flap at top as in the diagram
  • measure the height
  • measure the width
  • measure distance from left edge
  • measure distance from bottom edge
  • industry standard window and placement is shown in the diagram
  • And is 1.125 (h) x 4.5 (w); positioned .875 left and .5 bottom

Where to position custom windows

  • no closer than 3/8” from any edge
  • 1/2” minimum between windows
  • any copy or image must be minimum 1/8” from the window

High die cutting

  • is used when registration, bleeds, and cross overs are not critical
  • “cookie cutter” die used that is several inches high
  • die cutter uses lifts of paper about 2-3” high
  • 1/8” variation plus or minus is typical in any direction
  • bleeds must be wrapped around folds and edges 1/16"
  • borders ideally should be ¼” away from folds
  • layouts differ from steel rule die cutting layouts and must be provided by envelope company and adhered to by printer
  • a folded mock up should be delivered with the press sheets

Steel rule die cutting

  • is used when registration, bleeds, and cross-overs are critical
  • one sheet is cut at a time allowing for minimal if any variation
  • layouts differ from high die layouts and must be provided by envelope company and adhered to by printer
  • a folded mock up should be delivered with the press sheets

Peel & Seal

  • aggressive adhesive with a strip that is peeled off
  • do not need to “lick” the gum
  • extra spoilage needed
  • slower set up
  • slower run speed
  • higher spoilage rate
